How does a stratospheric balloon flight work?

In a joint discussion, we determine your wishes and ideas for the mission into the stratosphere.

We plan your mission.

We manufacture a customized payload (“spaceship”) for the mission according to your wishes and ideas.

We look for a suitable launch site and set a date for the launch. We also take the weather forecast into account.

We obtain the necessary permits from the authorities.

We create a forecast for the balloon flight in order to be able to define the exact landing point.

We launch your mission into space. After the launch, we set off directly to recover the “spaceship” immediately after landing.

How does a balloon flight into the stratosphere work?
A meteorological balloon which is filled with helium or hydrogen gas at launch provides the necessary lift. The payload, customized to your requirements, is attached to the balloon together with a parachute at take-off. A tracker is also attached to the balloon, which allows us to track the balloon. The balloon is then released into the air. As helium is lighter than the surrounding air, the balloon rises. Due to the decreasing air pressure at altitude, the balloon expands in the stratosphere to a diameter of up to 15 m. When the balloon reaches its maximum diameter in the stratosphere at an altitude of around 35,000 - 40,000 meters, it bursts (the latex balloon envelope is 100% biodegradable). The parachute slows down the payload during descent and ensures a soft landing. We track the balloon throughout the flight so that we can collect the payload immediately after landing and evaluate the data.
